History

From Böblingen to the Filder plain: history of Stuttgart Airport

Stuttgart’s first commercial airport was in Böblingen. As the site became too small for larger aircraft, air traffic moved to the Filder plain near Echterdingen in the late 1930s. After the Second World War the airport was initially used by US forces and then gradually expanded for civilian traffic.

Today STR has several terminals, an S-Bahn connection and sits directly on the A8 motorway. Since 2014 it has been named “Manfred Rommel Airport” after Stuttgart’s long-serving mayor.
