History

From heathland to hub: the history of Cologne Bonn Airport

The Wahner Heide was used by the military even before the First World War, and after the Second World War an airfield was built there under British administration. Civil scheduled flights began in the 1950s, and with the then capital Bonn close by, the airport quickly grew in importance.

In 1970 the distinctive Terminal 1 opened with its star-shaped piers, followed in 2000 by the glass Terminal 2. Today Cologne Bonn is not only an important passenger airport with night flight permission but also one of Germany’s largest cargo hubs, used by parcel carriers from around the world.
