From Schkeuditz airfield to cargo hub: the history of LEJ
The airport opened in the 1920s in Schkeuditz as a shared airfield for Leipzig and Halle. During the GDR era it played an important role above all during the Leipzig Trade Fair, when special flights brought guests from East and West.
After reunification the site was greatly expanded with a new runway, a modern terminal and its own directly connected ICE station. Since 2008 a major logistics group has operated its European air freight hub here, making LEJ one of Europe’s largest cargo airports.
