From St. Arnual to Ensheim: history of the airport
Saarbrücken’s first airfield lay in the valley at St. Arnual on the Saar and soon became too small and too prone to flooding for modern aircraft. A new airport was therefore built on the ridge near Ensheim, opening in the late 1960s.
Its hilltop location gives it a characteristic, slightly undulating runway. Today SCN connects Saarland with German cities and holiday destinations and is a convenient departure point for many commuters in the Greater Region.
