History

One of the oldest airports in the world: history of HAM

Hamburg Airport was founded in Fuhlsbüttel in 1911 – initially as an airship port. This makes it one of the oldest airports in the world still operating at its original site. Regular passenger services began in the 1920s.

After the war the airport was continuously modernised with new terminals, the Airport Plaza and an S-Bahn connection. Since 2016 it has been named “Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt” in honour of the former Federal Chancellor and honorary citizen of Hamburg.

Private transfer, taxi or train at Hamburg Airport?

The S1 S-Bahn reaches the central station in about 25 minutes. For cruise terminals, destinations away from the rail lines or with lots of luggage that is impractical. Taxis are available, but the fare depends on traffic. With FlyRide the price is fixed in advance.
