History

A new start after 1996: the history of Düsseldorf Airport

Düsseldorf Airport opened in 1927 and after the war became the most important aviation site on the Rhine and Ruhr. A tragic turning point was the major fire in April 1996, which killed 17 people and destroyed large parts of the terminal.

The airport was then extensively rebuilt under the “Airport 2000plus” programme, with modern fire safety standards, a new terminal and the SkyTrain, a suspended railway to the long-distance station. Today DUS is Germany’s third-largest hub and the gateway to the Rhineland for trade fair visitors from all over the world.
