History

Zeppelins, trade fairs and holiday flights: history of Lake Constance Airport

Aviation has a long tradition in Friedrichshafen: in the early 20th century Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin built his airships here, and an airfield was established early on in the Löwental district. Today modern Zeppelins once again take off over the lake for sightseeing flights.

After the Second World War the site developed into the regional airport for Upper Swabia and the Lake Constance area. It is especially busy during international trade fairs such as the outdoor and aviation shows, and holidaymakers use its leisure flights to the south.
