Frequently asked questions

Is Changi Airport open 24 hours?

Yes. Changi operates around the clock and the transit areas, many cafés and the Jewel’s Rain Vortex area stay accessible at night, although some shops and attractions close in the late evening. That makes it one of the most comfortable airports in the world for overnight layovers.

Why is Changi called the best airport in the world?

Changi has been named the World’s Best Airport by Skytrax more often than any other airport, thanks to fast immigration, very clean terminals, free attractions for transit passengers, efficient connections and Jewel Changi. Travellers also praise how quickly bags arrive and how easy it is to get to the city.

What can I do at Changi Airport during a layover?

Inside the transit area you can visit the Butterfly Garden in Terminal 3, relax in themed gardens, watch films in free airport cinemas, use free Wi-Fi and charging points, or book a transit hotel or lounge. If you have time to pass immigration, Jewel Changi (connected to Terminal 1) offers the Rain Vortex, the Shiseido Forest Valley, Canopy Park with its hedge maze and sky nets, and more than 280 shops and restaurants.

Where is the Rain Vortex and is it free?

The Rain Vortex is in the centre of Jewel Changi, on the public (landside) side of the airport. It is linked to Terminal 1 directly and to Terminals 2 and 3 via short walkways. Viewing the waterfall is free. In the evening it hosts a light and sound show — check the Jewel website for today’s show times. Canopy Park attractions above it require a ticket.

Can I leave Changi Airport during a layover?

Yes, if your nationality allows entry into Singapore and you have enough time. Many travellers with a stopover of 6+ hours visit Jewel or take the MRT to Marina Bay. Changi and Singapore Airlines also run a free Singapore tour for eligible transit passengers with a long enough connection; places are limited, so check current eligibility and registration on Changi Airport’s official website before you fly.

How do I get from Changi Airport to Singapore city centre?

The MRT (metro) station below Terminals 2 and 3 connects to the East-West Line; change at Tanah Merah for the city. A taxi or Grab ride to Marina Bay or Orchard Road takes about 20–30 minutes outside rush hour. Public buses also stop at the terminals.

Is there a hotel inside Changi Airport?

Yes. Transit (airside) options include Aerotel in Terminal 1 and transit lounges where you can shower or nap. Landside, you will find YOTELAIR in Jewel Changi and the Crowne Plaza Changi Airport hotel next to Terminal 3, which require passing immigration.

How long is the flight from Singapore to Frankfurt and which airlines fly nonstop?

Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa operate nonstop flights between Changi and Frankfurt (FRA). The flight takes roughly 12.5 to 13.5 hours depending on direction, winds and routing. Both airlines are Star Alliance members and use Terminal 1 in Frankfurt, so if you continue by car your driver can meet you there.

How early should I be at Changi Airport for a flight to Frankfurt?

For long-haul departures, aim to arrive about 2.5 to 3 hours before departure. Changi is famously efficient — automated immigration lanes are open to many passport holders — but security screening is done at the gate, so be at your gate when boarding opens.

Flying from Singapore to Frankfurt

Singapore–Frankfurt is one of the classic Europe–Asia routes. Overnight departures from Changi typically land in Frankfurt in the early morning, which makes a pre-booked transfer especially useful: no waiting at the taxi rank after a 13-hour flight, and your driver already knows if you land early or late.

Note: Since 9 June 2026 Frankfurt's Terminal 2 is closed for renovation. Flights use Terminal 1 or the new Terminal 3. Always check your terminal in your airline app.
