Aviation on Sylt has a long history: an airfield was built near Westerland even before the Second World War and was used by the military for many years. After the war it served British forces among others and later the German armed forces.
As tourism grew, civil air traffic became more and more important. Today Sylt Airport is very busy during the season and a quick alternative to arriving by car train across the Hindenburg causeway.

Private transfer, taxi or train at Sylt Airport?
Sylt has local buses and taxis, but in peak season taxis are quickly booked up. A pre-booked transfer is guaranteed to be there. Trips to the mainland require the car train across the Hindenburg causeway – its cost is charged separately for such rides.
