From Bindersleben to the world: history of the airport
The Erfurt-Bindersleben airfield was built in the 1930s. After the war, during the GDR era, it mainly served domestic and special flights. After reunification the site was modernised with an extended runway and a new terminal.
For some years the airport has been called Erfurt-Weimar to highlight its link with the cultural city of Weimar. A tram line connects the terminal directly with central Erfurt – a rarity among German airports.
