From US air base to holiday airport: the history of Hahn
The airfield was built in the early 1950s by French and American forces and for decades, as Hahn Air Base, was an important US Air Force base during the Cold War. Thousands of soldiers and their families lived in the region.
After the Americans left in the early 1990s the site was converted to civil use. Low-cost airlines in particular made Hahn well known, and it also developed into a significant cargo airport. The “Frankfurt” in its name still sparks debate – for travellers it is mainly a reminder to plan their onward journey carefully.
