A regional airport for East Westphalia-Lippe: the history
To connect East Westphalia to air travel, the districts of the region decided in the late 1960s to build a joint airport. The site near Büren-Ahden offered enough space and was conveniently located between Paderborn and Lippstadt.
Scheduled services began in the early 1970s. In the following decades PAD developed into a popular holiday airport with routes to the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. The Paderborn region, with its industrial and IT companies, also uses it for business travel.
