From mega-project to capital airport: the history of BER
Planning for a joint airport for the capital region began shortly after German reunification. Construction started in 2006 and the opening was originally scheduled for 2011. Technical problems, especially with fire safety, delayed the launch by almost a decade, turning BER into a symbol of delays in large construction projects.
On 31 October 2020 the airport finally opened. Shortly afterwards Berlin Tegel closed, and the old Schönefeld airport was integrated as Terminal 5 before that area was also taken out of service. Today BER handles all scheduled traffic for the capital region and ranks among Germany’s most important airports after Frankfurt and Munich.

Private transfer, taxi or train at BER?
The FEX airport express and the S-Bahn link BER with the city centre – cheap, but with changes and stairs if your destination is not next to a station. A regular taxi costs roughly €45 to €70 depending on traffic, and the price is not certain in advance. With FlyRide you know the final price when you book and travel door to door.

How long is the transfer from BER to Berlin Mitte?
Depending on traffic, the roughly 27 kilometres take about 35 to 45 minutes. At rush hour on the A113 we allow extra time so you reach the terminal in good time for departures.
Do you also drive from BER to Potsdam, Leipzig or Dresden?
