Frequently asked questions
How many airports are there in Istanbul?
Istanbul has two major passenger airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, the hub of Turkish Airlines, and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, used mainly by Pegasus and AJet. The old Atatürk Airport no longer handles scheduled passenger flights. Always check which airport is on your ticket — the two are about 80–90 km apart.
How far is Istanbul Airport from the city centre?
IST is about 35–45 km from Taksim and Sultanahmet. The M11 metro line connects the airport with the city’s metro network, Havaist airport buses go to the main districts, and a taxi takes about 40–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Can I leave the airport during a layover in Istanbul?
Yes, if your nationality allows entry to Türkiye (some need an e-Visa). Turkish Airlines’ Touristanbul programme offers free city tours for eligible international transfer passengers with a layover of roughly 6 to 24 hours — check current conditions and register at the Touristanbul desk in the arrivals area.
How long does it take to walk to the gates at Istanbul Airport?
The terminal is one of the largest in the world, and walking from security to a far gate can take 20 minutes or more. Use the travelators and electric carts, and keep an eye on screens showing walking times. For connections, Turkish Airlines usually sells a minimum connection time of around 60–75 minutes.

Where can I sleep or rest at Istanbul Airport?
Airside you can book a room at the YOTELAIR transit hotel or relax in lounges such as the IGA Lounge (paid access) or the Turkish Airlines lounges. There are also free quiet zones, prayer rooms and a large mosque linked to the terminal.

How long is the flight from Istanbul to Frankfurt?
The flight takes about 3 to 3.5 hours. Turkish Airlines operates several daily flights from IST and Lufthansa also flies the route; both arrive at Frankfurt Terminal 1. Low-cost carriers such as Pegasus and AJet fly to Frankfurt from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Germany is 1–2 hours behind Türkiye depending on the season.
How early should I be at Istanbul Airport?
Plan about 3 hours before an international flight. There is an initial security check at the terminal entrance, followed by check-in, passport control and a second security check, and walking distances are long.
